Move to enhance Bangladesh-Thailand Bilateral Trade

Bangladesh and Thailand have set a target of enhancing the volume of bilateral trade at the level of US$1 billion over the next five year period, said K Habib Sattar, President of Bangladesh-Thai Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Speaking at a seminar here on "Bangladesh-Thailand : Potentials for Partnership", held on August 31, he said, "this is an achieving target, given the fact that the current volume of two-way trade is already hovering near US$500 million mark."

Sattar said there are many segments like packaged food, beverages, capital equipment and machinery, tourism, medical tourism and aviation where Thai entrepreneurs can make investment in Bangladesh which could help attain the one billion dollar trade volume.

He suggested that the Bangladesh-Thai Joint Economic Commission should be re-activated to regularly monitor and steer the growth of bilateral trade.

The seminar was held on the occasion 36th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and Thailand and attended among others by Foreign Secretary Touhid Hossain and Thai Ambassador Chalermpol Thanchitt.

Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Thanchitt said Thailand attaches much importance to developing trade and economic relations with Bangladesh, adding that there is a great scope for further expanding bilateral trade and investment.
