Bangladesh and
Thailand have set a target of enhancing the volume of bilateral trade at
the level of US$1 billion over the next five year period, said K Habib
Sattar, President of Bangladesh-Thai Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Speaking at a
seminar here on "Bangladesh-Thailand : Potentials for Partnership", held
on August 31, he said, "this is an achieving target, given the fact that
the current volume of two-way trade is already hovering near US$500
million mark."
Sattar said there
are many segments like packaged food, beverages, capital equipment and
machinery, tourism, medical tourism and aviation where Thai
entrepreneurs can make investment in Bangladesh which could help attain
the one billion dollar trade volume.
He suggested that
the Bangladesh-Thai Joint Economic Commission should be re-activated to
regularly monitor and steer the growth of bilateral trade.
The seminar was held
on the occasion 36th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic
relations between Bangladesh and Thailand and attended among others by
Foreign Secretary Touhid Hossain and Thai Ambassador Chalermpol
Thanchitt.
Speaking on the
occasion, Ambassador Thanchitt said Thailand attaches much importance to
developing trade and economic relations with Bangladesh, adding that
there is a great scope for further expanding bilateral trade and
investment. |
