Mitsubishi Motors Thailand (MMTh) Co. Ltd. plans to invest 5 billion
baht to expand production at its Laem Chabang plant to produce a PPC
based on the Triton pickup truck at the end of this year.
“Mitsubishi sees the importance of Thailand as a production and export
base, as well as for its domestic market that is growing. We have a plan
to raise our production capacity in the future,” Michiro Imai, president
of Mitsubishi Motor Thailand Co. Ltd. said.
He said Misubishi plans to invest 5 billion baht at its Laem Chabang
plant in two projects. First is to produce a PPV based on the Triton
pickup truck while the second is to purchase machinery to raise
production capacity.
“We are also studying possibilities of investing more at Laem Chabang
because it is one of our important production bases,” Imai added.
Under Mitsubishi Motors “Step Up 2010” plan, the company plans to raise
sales from 1.337 million vehicles to 1.442 million vehicles by 2010 with
the introduction of several new models. Imai said Thailand is included
in that plan, and will serve as a production center for export to the
global market. Simultaneously, Misubishi also plans to raise domestic
sales in Thailand.
The Laem Chabang plant is capable of producing 200,000 vehicles per
year. Presently production is approximately 180,000 units per year, with
the Triton taking up 85-90 per cent of the capacity. As much as 80 per
cent of production is exported.
Imai noted that for Thailand, Misubishi plans to grow by 2 per cent to
26,900 units this year.
