The chief executive of
Thailand's Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturing Association
(PReMA), Dr Kitima Yuthavong, has described her country's prospects for
drug R&D as quite competitive, according to an interview with the
locally-published newspaper, The Nation. Dr Kitima also said that the
adoption of a co-payment system of funding health care, including
prescription drugs, would be one solution to helping the government
provide access to treatment without resorting to compulsory licenses, as
was the case under the previous, military-backed administration.
The PReMA chief
executive also told The Nation that Thailand is an attractive venue for
clinical trials by international drugmakers. Dr Kitima said:
"pharmaceutical companies conduct about 30% of their tests in Asia. Of
all these studies, Thailand currently has an 8% share."
