7 auto firms ask for eco-car incentives

Seven auto makers have submitted for investment incentives for their eco-car investment projects, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Industry Minister Kosit Panpiemras.

Kosit said after chairing the Board of Investment meeting on Friday that aside from Honda, which was the first to receive the incentives, there are Suzuki Motor, Siam Nissan Automobile, Toyota Motor, Mitsubishi, Tata Motors (Thailand) and Volkswagen.

The BoI on Friday approved the projects of Suzuki Motor and Siam Nissan which would require the combined investment of Bt15 billion.

Suzuki will spend Bt9.5 billion to produce eco-cars, with annual production capacity of 138,000 vehicles.

Fellow Japanese auto-maker Nissan will invest Bt5.55 billion in environmentally friendly cars, with annual capacity of 120,000 units.

To be eligible for incentives, a project must produce at least 100,000 vehicles per annum, and vehicles' fuel consumption must be at least 20 kilometres per litre.
