The global automotive parts supplier Continental Corporation is scheduled to open its plant in Thailand next month, confirming its confidence in the Thai economy. The German company has completed machinery installation at its Amata City plant in Rayong. "Installation of machines in the powertrain plant in Amata City has been progressing and is expected to be fully operational before the grand opening on June 16," said Thomas Chambers, managing director for Continental (Thailand). The plant will produce powertrain diesel injectors, high-pressure pumps and common rail assemblies. In the future, interior electronics will also be produced there. The production line will build exports for China, India and Europe in 2009. Then from 2010 onward, the production will also help support domestic consumption. Mr Chambers confirmed the current economic situation will not affect Continental's plans. He said Continental believed strongly in the global megatrends focusing on the environment, safety, information and affordable cars. Germany-based Continental AG, one of the world's top five automotive suppliers, has invested 100 million, or five billion baht, in the plant at Amata City. The new powertrain and interior manufacturing plant will occupy a floor space of 25,300 square metres (30 rai) and comprise a print/spray painting room, evaluation and section facilities including supplier quality assurance (SQA), quality management, laboratories, production engineering and tooling. With sales exceeding 24 billion in 2008, the Continental Corporation is one of the top automotive suppliers worldwide.
