PM: Govt to amend investment laws

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Thursday the government is ready to amend laws concerning invesments to boost confidence of both local and foreign investors in the Thai economy.

Mr Abhisit said this in a speech on ways of coping with the economic crisis and restructuring of the Thai economy.

He said it is necessary for the government to promote investment and do away with obstacles to it. In doing so, the government is ready to amend related laws.

The government also welcomes foreign firms to invest in mega-projects. For example, the Chinese government has been invited to invest in and develop the rail system.

Concerning mobilisation of capital, the government will push for the stock market to be a major source of capital for the private sectors. Incentives have been offerred for companies which receive investment promotion privileges be register for listing on the stock market.

Concerning state enterprises, the prime minister said he does not support them to be fully privatised by going on Securities Exchange of Thailand listing. State enterprises providing public utilities should not be privatised at all because doing so will affect the people, he added.
